The song I chose to analyze was the song, “One Day” by Matisyahu. I chose this song because it’s a song that I have known for many years and I feel that the lyrics have a strong meaning behind them. The song doesn’t have an actual story behind it, but it does talk about war. The themes that the song addresses are peace and unity. In the first and second stanza of the song Matisyahu sings, that he prays that God doesn’t let him die because he is has a purpose and that purpose is to help bring peace to the world. He also sings that one day there will be peace and no war, that children will get to play without fearing the bad. In the third stanza he sings, that even though there is war and there is a winner, in reality everybody loses because people are killed. The fourth, fifth, and sixth stanza say the same things as the first two stanzas, it’s just repeated. In the seventh stanza he sings, that one day there won’t be violence and there will be freedom. The rest of the stanzas are repeated. This song reflects back to all of the wars that have happened because he wants war to be nonexistent, he wants to live in peace. This song speaks to me today because there are still wars going on right now. I also want peace and unity. I don’t think that war should be the solution to our problems. My brother is in the Military and he is risking his life so that we all have freedom here at home.

The picture above is a picture of Matisyahu. The URL for the music video for the song, “One Day” is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRmBChQjZPs he also has another version of the song where he features Akon and the URL for that version is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8zK7PHIkgA I like the Akon version better because it is a little bit more upbeat and it’s more my style of music.

The lyrics are:

Sometimes I lay under the moon

I thank God I'm breathing

And then I pray don't take me soon

I am here for a reason

Sometimes in my tears I drown

But I never let it get me down

So when negativity surrounds

I know some day it'll all turn around

Because

All my life I've been waiting for

I've been praying for

For the people to say

That we don't wanna fight no more

They'll be no more war

And our children will play

One day One day One day

One day One day One day

It's not about win or lose

Cause we all lose when they feed on the souls of the innocent

Blood drenched pavement

Keep on moving though the waters stay raging

In this maze you can lose your ways (your way)

It might drive you crazy but don't let it faze you no way

(no way)

Sometimes in my tears I drown

But I never let it get me down

So when negativity surrounds

I know some day it'll all turn around

Because

All my life I've been waiting for

I've been praying for

For the people to say

That we don't wanna fight no more

They'll be no more war

And our children will play

One day One day One day

One day One day One day

All my life I've been waiting for

I've been praying for

For the people to say

That we don't wanna fight no more

They'll be no more war

And our children will play

One day One day One day

One day One day One day

One day this all will change

Treat people the same

Stop with the violence

Down with the hate

One day we'll all be free

And proud to be under the same sun

Singing songs of freedom like

Why-ohhhhhhhh

Why-ohhh-ohhh-ohhh

Why-ohhhhh-why-ohhh

All my life I've been waiting for

I've been praying for

For the people to say

That we don't wanna fight no more

They'll be no more war

And our children will play

One day One day One day

One day One day One day

All my life I've been waiting for

I've been praying for

For the people to say

That we don't wanna fight no more

They'll be no more war

And our children will play

One day One day One day

One day One day One day

One day One day One day

One day One day One day

  1. This is the first time I heard the song and I like it, sound pretty good, the most important thing is the content or messages the singer trying to send to listener all over the world. It has a powerful lyrics and for him to wrote a song like this could absolutely have a bigger impact to its wider audiences. Yes his right that we're here for a reason and whatever it is should be for the betterment of human race. We live in a world wherein greed, power and absolute disregard of human lives is prevalent and our only hope that people in power should push a policy for equality and peace not war. We only have one race and we should work towards uplifting everyone, spread goodwill among people, promote love instead of hate and above all we should work hard regarding preservation and not for extinction of human race.

    1. Yes, I never thought that I would like this type of music, but I love this song. I didn't know about this song until I was an 8th grader. The math teacher I had back in middle school served in the army and he introduced the song to my whole class. I thought that it would be a perfect song for this blog post. I'm glad you liked it!

  2. I remember this song from when I was in middle school. I had forgotten about it but in reading your post it came back to me. I remember even in middle school that I knew how powerful the song was meant to be even if I didn't fully pay attention to the meaning. This song was kind of perfect for the blog post because it's a song about hope for a better future with no war.
